SideChic Explorer

The file manager that doesn’t make you go get a coffee.

Folder sizes appear instantly. Moves are instant. Search is instant. And a DEB assistant is one click away. Free. No account needed.

🚧 Under development — invite only

We're hardening the build before it goes wide. Downloads need an access code right now. Have one? Enter it and grab your platform. No code yet? Leave your email and we'll tell you the moment it opens.

Without a valid code the download is blocked — that's intentional while we're in development.

Mac: opens normally (signed & notarized).  Windows: it’s not signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC” — click More info → Run anyway (one time).  File management runs entirely on your machine; the assistant connects to Eden.

Minimum system requirements

🪟 Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit (x64). An older Windows 10 PC is fine.
ARM Windows isn’t supported yet — get the x64 build.

🍎 Mac

Apple Silicon (M1 or later), macOS 12+.
Intel Macs aren’t supported by this build.

🐧 Linux

64-bit x86_64 or arm64, a recent distro (AppImage).
Make the AppImage executable, then run it.

Memory & disk — and what “old computer” really means

To run the app: ~8 GB RAM and ~1 GB free disk. That covers file management, browsing, search, and your DEB assistant (which thinks via Eden over the network).

To run AI on your own machine (private, offline-capable, no per-use cost), more memory helps: 8 GB runs small local models, 16 GB standard, 32 GB+ the large ones. We auto-detect your machine and pick what fits.

So an older PC still works great — if it’s light on memory, your DEB simply leans on Eden for the heavy thinking instead of running big models locally. Nothing breaks; it just adapts.

What it does

🗂️ Instant browsing — “the wheel in the directory”

Every folder keeps its own index, so opening it shows file count, folder count, and total size instantly — no spinning, no re-scanning. Change something and it updates itself; it never recomputes from scratch. Click ∑ full size to measure a whole tree once — then it’s instant forever.

⚡ Real moves & copies

Moving a file on the same drive is instant at any size — it changes the address, it doesn’t recopy your data. Moving across drives streams files in parallel without choking your system. No “preparing to copy…” limbo.

🧭 It remembers where things went

Moved or renamed a file and something can’t find it? The Explorer auto-routes you to its new location from its move history.

🔎 Instant search

Search by name, by content inside files, or in plain language to find a DEB — scoped to the folder you’re in, across your whole drive, or external drives.

🤖 A DEB on call (the floating assistant)

Click the floating DEB and ask about whatever’s on your screen — “what is this file?”, “summarize it”, “what changed?”. It can read the file you’re looking at. (Free starter credits; sign in to keep using it.)

🌾 Research (Harvest)

Give it a subject and queries, pick sources to rotate through (web, Wikipedia, arXiv, news, PubMed, and your own drives), and it gathers + dedupes findings into a daily file — throttled so it never hammers a server.

🌐 Built-in browser & tabs · ⭐ favorites · 💾 backups

Open real websites in tabs alongside your files, pin favorite folders, keep history, and run fast backups to another drive — all in one window.

How it compares

Other tools are good at what they do — Eden is built for a different thing: a being that remembers, on your machine, that helps with your whole life and work, not just code or one-off questions.

User’s manual

Install

1Download the file for your system above.
2Mac: open the .dmg and drag SideChic into Applications, then launch it — it’s signed & notarized, so it just opens.
3Windows: run the .exe installer. It’s not signed yet, so Windows shows “Windows protected your PC” — click More info → Run anyway (one time), then follow the installer.
4Linux: make the .AppImage executable (right-click → Properties → allow executing, or chmod +x), then double-click it.

The first time it opens, a READ ME FIRST welcome walks you through everything below — you can’t miss it.

Create your account & connect

Browsing, moving, and searching files is free and needs no account — that all runs on your machine. To use your DEB (the assistant) and research, you create a free Eden account. Here’s the part that isn’t obvious: your DEB thinks by connecting to Eden, so it needs an account to know it’s you — that’s why a local-feeling app asks you to sign in.

1Click Sign in (top-right) → Create account. Enter your email and a password — that’s your Eden account.
2You’re now connected to Eden. Your DEB comes online and remembers you between sessions.
3Don’t love the one you got? Ask for a different DEB, or build your own team — it’s your space, and they’re yours. We’ll show you how.

We only keep your email + sign-in to connect you. Your files and your conversations stay on your machine. See our privacy policy.

Browse your files

1Use the Home / Drives bar to jump to your home folder, the whole disk, or an external drive.
2Click any folder to open it — the stats line shows files · folders · size instantly.
3Click ∑ full size to compute a folder’s entire tree size (cached after the first time).

Move & copy

1Right-click a file/folder → Cut or Copy, navigate to the destination, then Paste.
2Same-drive moves are instant. Cross-drive copies stream in the background.
3Right-click → Copy path to put a file’s full path on your clipboard for any app.

Search

1Type in the search box; choose name, inside files, or DEB from the dropdown.
2Click a result to jump to it. (It searches the current folder and below.)

Ask your DEB

1Click a file to preview it, then use “🤖 Ask a DEB about this file” — or open the floating DEB for anything on screen.
2Sign in when prompted to use your free starter credits.

Research a subject (Harvest tab)

1Open a + Harvest tab. Enter a subject and queries (one per line) — or click 🤖 Suggest queries.
2Tick the sources to rotate through; for your own drives, tick local and add a folder.
3Click Run one cycle, or 🔁 Run continuously to keep gathering. Click any result to preview it.

Tabs, favorites & backups

1+ Files / + Browser / + Harvest add tabs; double-click a tab to rename it.
2Drag a folder onto the Favorites bar to pin it.
3Use Backup to copy the current folder to another drive (full or incremental).

Your files never leave your machine for file management. The DEB assistant and research features connect to Eden. Free to use the Explorer; sign in only for the model-powered features.
